logo Release Types

Cigars are grouped into the following categories in this website:

Current Standard Production

Current standard production cigars are cigars that are presently in regular factory production and are commercially available on a continuing basis.

Discontinued Standard Production

Discontinued standard production cigars are cigars that have been officially confirmed by Habanos SA as discontinued.

For older cigars, the date shown as discontinued does not necessarily indicate commercial availability up to that time, as many cigars ceased being made long before being officially discontinued.

Recently discontinued cigars tend to remain commercially available for only a short time.  Some cigars discontinued around 2002/3 have appeared with a box code a year after the date the cigar was officially cancelled, as the cigars were not boxed until later.

Many discontinued cigars can be obtained (at a premium) in the vintage cigar market.

Special Production - Special Releases

Special production cigars are special releases for either an annual series or for a once-off commemorative release.  They are usually distinguished by new vitolas, different packaging, different or additional bands, the use of specially aged tobacco, etc.

They are generally available short term, in limited quantities, and at a premium price.

Unlisted Cigars

Non-commercial cigars, cigars that are gifted or auctioned to attendees at special events, pre-production cigars, special commissions for a particular dealer, sample packs, regional travel humidors, diplomatic cigars, mini cigars, cigarettes, and the like are not listed on this website.

logo Limited Edition Series

bandIn 2000, Habanos S.A. introduced the Limited Edition (Edición Limitada) Series for their premium brands.  This series comprises cigar vitolas that are not in current production.

Initially, the cigars were manufactured using two year old aged wrappers from the upper level of the plant, to produce a unique darker colour.

Release History

2001   This years cigars were not released until early to mid 2002. There was also a 2001 Limited Edition Vegas Robaina Prominente gifted to attendees at the 2002 Habano Festival, to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Vegas Robaina brand.  Only 800 of these cigars were produced.

2002   There was no Limited Edition releases this year.   This was probably due to the late release of the 2001 LE cigars and the lack of suitable two-year old wrapper tobacco.  Also Habanos SA may well have underestimated the success of the Limited Edition concept.

2006   This was the fifth anniversary of this series.  It involved a re-issue of three of the most popular LE cigars to date.

2007   This year was the first year that all the tobacco (wrapper, binder, & filler) was aged for two years.

logo Regional Edition Series

band In 2005, Habanos S.A. introduced the Regional Edition (Edición Regional) Series.

The ten worldwide premium Global & Niche brands are excluded from this series.

This leaves the seventeen local and multi-local brands for these regional editions.  As these brands are not promoted worldwide, this series was seen as an ideal marketing method to promote them.  Despite this criteria, in 2007 a previously unheard-of brand, Edmundo Dante (a de-facto Montecristo) was released for Mexico.

This series comprises special limited production cigars made exclusively for a regional market, and are available for a one or two year period.  After this, Habanos has the right to add this cigar to the current production range.  The cigars must be selected from current production vitolas that are not already available in that brand.  Some of the newly introduced vitolas from the premium brands are excluded.

Each release is initiated by the Regional Distributor, who under-right the setup costs. Some distributors have elected to reissue in the second year.  Reissue cigars are identical but the box leaflet may have a statement "Its great acceptance encourages us to present this edition again..." or similar, depending on the country of distribution.

Regional Bands

The Regional Edition cigars normally have two bands.

The main band is normally a standard production band, but can be a modified / enhanced band, or a replica of an old band.

The second band is a special red & silver band.  Earlier releases used a common "Edicion Regional" band that does not include the region name.  Most releases use a standard band type, which states "Exclusivo", followed by the Region Name in Spanish.

The 2005 UK release did not have a second band.

Where re-release information is available, it is noted in the status section of the individual cigar's details.

The final released in late 2002 was due to a quantity of the original jars being rejected (mainly) due to lid imperfections.  These boxes bear a OSU Nov 2002 release code.  These jars contain the 1999 production cigars, which were stored until replacement jars became available.
